Basico' (Messina Province) is 72 km from Messina, alt. 520 m, in the eastern Nebrodi, on the northwest slopes of Monte
Pito, area 12 sq km, pop. 877, post-code 98060, tel. 0941. Economy: agriculture
(cereals, grapes), stock breeding.
Situated in an important archaeological area (neolithic traces on Mount Pito,
vast necropolises around the town), it was a Sican-Sicel colony of Abaceno.
A hamlet existed here in the late Middle Ages, and in the 13th century it was the site
of the no longer extant Monastery of St. Mary of Basico.
Of interest: the Provola Cheese Festival is on August 19th.
Churches (Messina Diocese) include the following:
San Francesco D'Assisi (Chiesa Madre, 1600)
Chiesa di San Biago (16th century, historic)
Monastery of the Basilian Fathers (with its 13 century Basilian crypts, historic)

My latest book on CD is titled Sicily - A Reference for Researchers and is now available. With a file for each town (plus many other files), it relates the history of Sicily as reflected in the photos, records and festivals of its towns. It contains over 2500 text and photo files and can be ordered at CD order.
