Buscemi (Siracusa Province) is 53 km from Siracusa, alt. 761 m, in the highest sector of the Hyblaean Mountains, on the eastern slopes of Monte Contessa, on the left of the River Anapo, area 51.6 sq km, pop. 1,276, post-code 96010, tel. 0931. Economy: Agriculture, stone quarries.
It existed in the Norman epoch and is mentioned by the Arab geographer Edrisi. It was later an important feudal center. The old town, on Monte San Nicolo, was destroyed by the earthquake in 1693 and immediately afterwards rebuilt a little further to the north in its present site.
