Capizzi (Messina Province) is 164 km from Messina, alt. 1,100 m, in the southern Nebrodi, on the slopes of Monte
Parmieri, area 70 sq km, pop. 3,779, post-code 98021, tel. 0935. Economy:
agriculture (wheat cherries, almonds), dairy products.
Its origins are ancient, though not known with absolute certainty. There was an
Arab fortress here; it was a city of the royal domain under the Normans, and it
was subsequently the fief of various overlords.
Of interest: The Chiesa Madre stands in Piazza del Plebiscito: the five ogival portal dates from
1234.
Capizzi is one of the highest communes in Sicily. The surrounding panorama, vast
and fascinating, was dominated, as is often the case, by the castle long fought
over by Normans and Arabs.
Churches (Patti Diocese) include the following:
Santi Nicolo' e Giacomo (Chiesa Madre)

My latest book on CD is titled Sicily - A Reference for Researchers and is now available. With a file for each town (plus many other files), it relates the history of Sicily as reflected in the photos, records and festivals of its towns. It contains over 2500 text and photo files and can be ordered at CD order.
