Caronia (Messina Province) is 145 km from Messina, atl. 304 m, in the western Nebrodi, on the right of the River
Caronia, area 226.5 sq km, pop. 4,118, post-code 98072, tel. 0921. Economy:
agriculture (citrus fruit, olives, grapes, sumac, cork); dairy products, olive
oil, cement.
The Greek town of Caleacte was situated in this area (5th century BC). The modern town
is possibly Arabic in origin.It has given its name to the nearby mountains, the
Monti Caronie, or Nebrodi meridionali (the south Nebrodi). In this area is the
largest forest in Sicily, the Bosco di Caronia.
Of interest: Castle; An unusual festivity is that of St Biagio, 12th August.
