Cassaro (Siracusa Province) is 47 km from Siracusa, alt. 550 m, in the Hyblaean Mountains dominating the River Anapo, are 19.4 sq km, pop. 943, post-code 96010, tel. 0931. Economy: Agriculture, gravel quarries.
It developed in the 12th century around a fort that already existed in Arab times (the modern name of the town comes from the Arabic Kasr, castle). After the earthquake in 1693, the ancient town was abandoned and the modern one built on its present site. It was a fief of the Gaetanis from the 16th century to the 18th, and then of the Statellas after 1776.
