Giarratana (Ragusa Province) is 21 km from Ragusa, alt. 520 m, in the central sector of the Monti Iblei, on the slopes of Monte Lauro, area 43.5 sq km, pop. 3,404, post-code 97010, tel. 0932. Agricultural economy: cereals, onions.
The town was built on its present site following the earthquake in 1693 which destroyed the Norman village standing at a higher altitude, near Sopra la Balza.
Churches (Ragusa Diocese) include the following:
Maria SS. Annunziata e S. Guiseppe (construction started in 1696, ended in 1937)
Chiesa di San Bartolomeo (18th century; frescoed by Gaetano di Stefano, historic)
Chiesa di Sant'Antonio (18th century; named Cuozzo; baroque, historic)
