Gioiosa Guardia (Messina Province) was founded in 1366 by the Vinciguerra family. Gioiosa Guardia, also known as Gioiosa Vecchia, was abandoned in the 18th century, when its inhabitants moved down valley to Gioiosa Marea.

An ancient settlement dating from the 5th century BC has been discovered here.
