Grotte (Agrigento Province) is 20 km. from Agrigento, alt. 516 m., on a hillside by the River San Biagio, area 23.9 sq. km., pop. over 7400, post-code 92020, tel. 0922. Agricultural economy: almonds, grapes.
The splendid ancient Greek city of Erbesso may have stood in its territory, in medieval times it belonged to the the Ventimiglia and the Montaperto families, and from the early 18th century to the La Grua Talamanca family. The town gets its name from the numerous caves in the area, some actually found in the town itself. The town layout is typically medieval, except for the construction of the Corso Garibaldi in the 19th century.
Churches (Agrigento Diocese) include the following:
Santa Venera Vergine e Martire (Chiesa Madre) (Madonna d'Itria, 18th century)
Chiesa del Carmine (16th century, historic)
San Rocco
