Melilli (Siracusa Province) is 22 km from Siracusa alt. 310 m, in the eastern Hyblaean Mountains, on a highland in the northern extremeties of the Monti Climiti, area 136.1 sq km, pop. 12,234, post-code 96010, tel. 0931. Economy: agriculture, construction companies, stone quarries.
The town has been the subject of heated arguments because of the pollution caused by the nearby chemical plant at Priolo.
It was also heavily bombed during the last war.
In feudal times Melilli belonged to the County of Augusta and with its castle in controlled the road from Augusta to Siracusa.
