Montalbano Elicona (Messina Province) is 85 km from Messina, alt. 920 m, in the northern Nebrodi, northwest of Monte Seggio, on the right-hand face of the valley of the Elicona torrent, area 67.5 sq km, pop. 3,370, post-code 98065, tel. 0941. Economy: various agriculture, animal-farming for the making of cheese (caciocavallo), mineral waters.
Mentioned as far back as the 11th century, it took part in the Guelph revolt against Frederick II of Swabia. As a fief, it belonged to a succession of families - Alagona, Lanza di Malvagna, Romano Colonna di Cesaro and Bonanno.
