Petralia Sottana (
Palermo Province) is 105 km. from
Palermo, alt. 1,000 m., in the eastern Madonie, on the River Imera North, area 178.04 sq. km., pop. over 3,700, post-code 90027, tel. 0921. Economy: agriculture, (cereals, wine), sheep-farming (cheese, wool), foodstuff industries.
The town developed around the Norman castle in the 14th century. It is referred to as Petralia inferior, to distinguish it from Petralia superior, or Soprana.
On the first Sunday after the festivity of Ferragosto (15th August) is the Ballo-pantomima della Cordella (Rope Dance) and traditional nuptial procession.
