Pozzallo (Ragusa Province) is 35 km from Ragusa, alt. 20 m, on the caost of the Strait of Sicily, between the mouth of the River Irminio and Capo della Corrente, area 13.9 sq km, pop. 17,502, post-code 97016, tel. 0932. Economy: carobs, fishing.
It used to be an important harbor, and was the property of Bernardo Cabrera, Count of Modica, from the end of the 14th century. Cabrera obtained considerable tax exemptions an in 1429 built an imposing tower here, to defend the wheat-loader from pirate attacks; the tower still preserves its fine ribbed cross vaults.
The town developed around the tower and became an autonomous commune in 1829, the only one by the sea in the province of Ragusa.
Of interest: Palazzo Musso (1926); Town Hall and the public gardens
