Ragalna (Catania Province) is 30 km from Catania, alt. 700 m, on the slopes of Etna, area 39.23 sq km, pop. over 2600, post-code 95030, tel. 095. Agricultural economy, tourism.
The ancient village was of Arab origin, (the name of the town means Anna in Arabic). It is a line of houses 8 km long. Its territory reaches almost to the top of the volcano (alt. 2815). It is historically a vacation place for Greeks, Arabs, Normans, and the residents of Paterno. The urban center finally developed in 1868 around the Chiesa Madre. It is now an autonomous comune since 1985 and continues to be a popular resort area.
Of interest are the natural volcanic caves and farmland in the surrounding countryside. The Astrophysical Observatory and the Botanical Garden of the University of Catania are located in town.
Churches (Catania Diocese) include the following:
Santa Maria del Carmelo (Chiesa Madre)
Santa Barbara
On July 16 is the Festa of Madonna del Carmelo, also on the last Sunday of September. There is a festival of local vegitation and wine held here in November.

With a file for each town (plus many other files), it relates the history of Sicily as reflected in the photos, records and festivals of its towns. It contains over 2500 text and photo files and can be ordered at CD order.
