San Giovanni Gemini (Agrigento Province) is 57 km. from Agrigento, alt. 670 m., in the highest part of the Sicani mountains, on the northeastern slopes of Mount Cammarata, also known as Monte Gemini, area 26.3 sq. km., pop. over 8500, post-code 92020, tel. 0922. Economy: agriculture (citrus fruit, cereals, broad beans); buildings and stone, sand and rock salt mining.
The town was founded in 1451 by Federico I Abatellis, Count of Cammarata, in the neighborhood of an ancient chapel dedicated to San Giovanni. This was the name of the town until 1879, when the specification Gemini was added, referring to the twin peaks of Monte Cammarata.
