San Giovanni La Punta (Catania Province) is 10 km from Catania, alt. 350 m, on the southeast slope of Mt. Etna, area 10.6 sq km, with a population of over 19,100, post code 95037, tel. 095. Economy: agriculture, summer tourism.
The name of the town is derived from the patron saint and from a mound of lava (punta = point) that is solidified in the shape of a point.
For many years, it was part of Catania. After 1646, it was a fief of the Counts of Massa. It has expanded considerably in recent years because it is so near Catania.
Of interest are the several palaces and the gardens of the Paterno Castello Carcaci family.
On December 27 is the Festa of San Giovanni Evangelista.
