Santa Croce Camerina (Ragusa Province) is 24 km from Ragusa, alt. 87 m, in the southernmost limits of the Monti Iblei, near the coast of the Strait of Sicily. Area 40.76 sq km, pop. 8,024, post-code 97017, tel. 0932. Agricultural economy: greenhouse horticulture.
Its territory includes the ruins of the ancient Camarina.
The modern town was founded in 1598 by Giovanbattista Celestri, Marquis of Santa Croce, on the site of a pre-existing 15th century hamlet.
