Savoca (Messina Province) is 39 km from Messina, alt. 303 m, in the foothills of the southern Peloritani, between the Savoca torrent and the River d'Agro, area 8.8 sq km, pop. 1,553, post-code 98038, tel. 0942. Agricultural economy.
The town is recorded with its present name in 1415, but it probably dates from the first half of the 12th century, when a Norman fortress was built. The name Savoca would appear to be derived from the "sambuchi", i.e. elder-trees (sambucas is Latin, from which Sabuca, Savoca), which are still plentiful in the area.
Churches (Messina Diocese) include the following:
S. Maria Assunta (Chiesa Madre)
Santa Lucia
Santa Michele
Santa Nicolo
Santi Rosalia e Francesco di Paola (Rina - suburb of Savoca)
