Scaletta Zanclea (Messina Province) is 19 km from Messina, alt. 8 m, on the Ionian coast north of the mouth of the River Alcantara, area 4.5 sq km, pop. 2,735, post-code 98029, tel. 090. Agricultural economy.

This is a scattered commune, with its adminstrative center at Guidomandri Inferiore.

The oldest settlement is that of Scaletta Superiore, which developed in the 16th century, under the overlordship of the Marchese family, around the castle founded in the first half of the 13th century. The communal territory was a fief of the Marcheses from 1408 to 1614, then of the Ventimiglias and lastly of the Ruffos.

Scaletta Superiore is dominated by the castle, the product of a series of constructions and reconstructions between the 13th and the 17th centuries, now used as a gallery of modern art.

Churches (Messina Diocese) include the following:

S. Maria del Carmelo e S. Nicolo (Chiesa Madre)
S. Maria Annunziata e Loreto (Guidomandri Marina - suburb of Scaletta Zanclea)
