Tripi (Messina Province) is 70 km from Messina, alt. 450 m, in the northern Nebrodi, on a high ridge which to the east dominates the valley of the River Novaara and to the west slopes down towards the Tellarita torrent, area 54.4 sq km, pop. 1,201, post-code 98060, tel. 0941. Agricultural economy.
This is the ancient Abacaenum, an important Sicel center which declined with expansion of Siracusa and the foundation of Tindari (396 BC).
The town, in the Middle Ages, surrounded the castle. It was a fief of Ruggero di Lauria (13th century) and subsequently of the Villarants, the Ventimiglias, the Geotanis and the Marinos.
The ruins of the castle stand high above the little town, still dominating the entire area.
Churches (Messina Diocese) include the following:
S. Vincenzo Martire e S. Maria del Rosario (Chiesa Madre)
S. Gaetano (Campogrande-Tripi - suburb of Tripi)
