Venetico (Messina Province) is 35 km from Messina, alt. 227 m, in the hinterland of the Gulf of Milazzo, in the foothills of the Peloritani, area 4.4 sq km, pop. 3,664, post-code 98040, tel. 090. Economy: agriculture, summer tourism.
The off-shore waters were probably the scene of the Battle of Naulochos (36 BC), in which Agrippa destroyed the fleet of Sextus Pompey. The commune is scattered: Venetico Marina is on the coast, while Ventico Superiore is on the ridge between the Misuti and the Cucuzzaro torrents. Both parts of the town are of late medieval origin (after the 15th century they were a fief of the Spadafora family). In the years 1929-40, its autonomous status was suspended and Venetico was a ward of Spadafora.
Of interest: Castle, fountain.
Churches (Messina Diocese) include the following:
S. Nicolo' (Chiesa Madre)
