Villafranca Tirrena (Messina Province) is 23 km from Messina, alt. 22 m, on the coast of the Gulf of Milazzo, area 14.3 sq km, pop. 7,881, post-code 98049, tel. 090. Economy: agriculture, summer tourism.
Already recorded in the Aragonese period, it was a fief of the Cottone family in the 16th century, and it was the site of a busy trading-station along the Palermo-Messina road. In the last few decades the town has considerably increased in population.
Of interest: its baronial palace.
Churches (Messina Diocese) include the following:
S. Nicolo' (Chiesa Madre)
Santa Margherita Vergine e Martire (Calvaruso - suburb of Villiafranca Tirrena)
