Gibellina (Trapani Province) is 63 km from Trapani, alt. 227 m, in the basin of the River Belice, on the southeast slopes of Monte Rocca Tonda, area 45 sq km, pop. 5,036, post-code 91024, tel. 0924. Agricultural economy.
The medieval town which developed in the 14th century around the castle built by Manfred Chiaromonte was destroyed by the greath earthquake in 1968.
The ruins of old Gibellina have been covered over in a great sheet of concrete, known as the cretto di Burri from the name of the artist who created it, Alberto Burri. Against this backdrop of ruins, plays, concerts and shows are periodically organized here.
The Ethno-Anthropological Museum, in Viale Vespri Siciliani, and the Museum of Modern Art, in Via Gemellaro, give us an idea of the cultural aspirations of the town.
