Ribera (Agrigento Province) is 51 km. from Agrigento, alt. 223 m., between the Rivers Magazzolo and Verdura, area 118.7 sq. km., pop. over 21,100, post-code 92016, tel. 0925. Economy: agriculture (citrus fruit, strawberries, almonds, olives, grapes); olive oil, wine and pasta industries.
The town probably rose on the site of the ancient "Allava", to which the Byzantine necropolis near the modern town may possibly be attributed. In 1627, Luigi Guglielmo Moncada, Prince of Paterno, founded a new center named after his wife, Maria Alfan di Ribera. The new center developed rapidly, thanks to the fertility of the soil and the accessibility of the area. The town is still very prosperous both economically and demographically.
Of interest is the town hall (19th century), and the Castello di Poggio Diana, built by Guglielmo Peralta in the 14th century.
Churches (Agrigento Diocese) include the following:
San Nicolo' di Bari (Chiesa Madre) (Maria SS. del Rosario, 18th century)
B.M.V. della Pieta'
Maria SS. Immacolata
S. Domenico Savio
S. Pietro Apostolo
San Giovanni Bosco
