Salaparuta (Trapani Province) is 100 km from Trapani, alt. 171 m, in the Upper Belice Valley, on the southern slopes of Monte Porcello, area 41.62 sq km, pop. 1,904, post-code 91020, tel. 0924. Agricultural economy: cereals, grapes, citrus fruit.
The fief belonged to the Paruta family, who founded the town and gave it its name: sala, a Norman dialect words, means 'dwelling' and Salaparuta thus comes from sala parutae, the dwelling of the Parutas.
The old town was completely destroyed by the earthquake in January 1968, and rebuilt downhill, with a modern and rational layout.
The new Chiesa Madre contains a fine statue of St Catherine, which survived the earthquake.
